How typing speed and accuracy are calculated
TypeSarthi’s WPM score is correctly matched characters divided by five, divided by elapsed minutes. Accuracy also accounts for wrong characters you corrected during the test.
Words per minute (WPM)
We use five characters as one standard word. Spaces, punctuation and case matter. Each typed character is compared with the character at the same position in the passage. Only matching characters contribute to the displayed WPM.
WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ elapsed minutes
The clock begins at your first input. A finished result uses at least one second of elapsed time, and the displayed score is rounded to the nearest whole number. Short bursts can be noisy, so compare tests of the same duration.
Accuracy includes corrected mistakes
Remaining errors are typed characters that differ from the passage at the same position. Corrected errors count wrong characters removed or replaced during editing. If you repeatedly type and correct a mistake, it can count more than once.
Accuracy = correct characters ÷ (characters currently typed + corrected errors) × 100
This means correcting a mistake improves the final text but does not erase the mistake from accuracy. The percentage is rounded to the nearest whole number. A blank test shows 100% as its initial display; it is not saved as a completed test.
A worked example
Suppose a two-minute session ends with 300 typed characters. Of those, 290 match the passage and 10 are wrong. You also corrected 5 wrong characters along the way.
- Speed: 290 ÷ 5 ÷ 2 = 29 WPM.
- Accuracy: 290 ÷ (300 + 5) × 100 = 95.08%, displayed as 95%.
- Errors left: 10. Corrected errors: 5.

Hindi and Unicode character counting
The current scoring engine counts Unicode code points. A Hindi syllable that looks like one unit may contain several code points, such as a consonant and a vowel sign. The score therefore does not count physical keystrokes or visible syllables.
The comparison is exact and position-based. A missing space can shift later characters and mark them wrong until alignment is corrected. Input methods can also replace several code points while composing Hindi text, which may affect corrected-error counts.

What counts as a finished session?
A session can finish when time runs out, when you reach the passage length, or when you press Finish test. It is saved only after typing has started and at least one character remains. Finishing early uses the time actually spent, not the full selected duration.
For a useful comparison, keep the language, duration and input method consistent. Avoid pasting text into a speed test. A pasted passage is not a measure of typing speed.
